So early into 2015, and I saw a 2016 Kia Sorento at a Kia booth in our mall. Doesn't look bad, but it just seems super early to already have 2016 MY vehicles for sale. Here's the dealer site for it.

Are these the ones that were advertised with the Super Bowl commercial? I don't know. A Pierce Brosnan commercial would definitely make me immediately buy whatever he was trying to sell.

Nope, they have several in stock.

A bit, maybe. I remember seeing a 2008 Challenger SRT8 (one of the launch edition ones) in May of 2007, and thinking that was early. But, not like this.

Do those have the updated infotainment system out of the Mazda3?

Now how are you supposed to a handbrake slide with that? C'mon, Mazda!

I believe so. It IS effective marketing.

It's because they want to sell "NEW NEW NEW" cars, and when your vehicle is old enough that it doesn't change from one year to the next, there's no reason not to change the model year earlier just to look newer.

It's an all-new model, and if the automaker thinks it's going to be a super hot seller sometimes they'll bring them out as early as they possibly can. Jeep did the same thing a couple years ago when the 2014 Grand Cherokee came out- we started getting those in January.

Well, Kia's offerings have been getting better and better. And a lot of deep-pocketed folks have that mentality where the newest is the best, so if they have the chance to buy a 2016 MY vehicle in the first quarter of 2015, and their choices are limited, they may go for the Kia. Plus, I'm not going to lie, the 2016 Sorento is super sharp looking inside and out. I'm really impressed with them these days, even if they are trying to sell a $60k+ high end luxury car. They certainly have the package right, if not the brand recognition yet.

Crazy since Fords 2015 stuff isn't even out yet. wanting to read on the 2015 focus and it's not even on the website.

Yes, it has the new MAZDACONNECT software. Screen is still in the same place, but its harder to leave fingerprints on it and the surround.

I sat in a 2015 Mustang late last year, and it was pretty cool, but that, and the Fusion, are the only 2015 Fords I've seen to date, and the 2015 Fusion is indistinguishable from the 2013 and 2014.

This is exactly why I think this MY thing is stupid. It made sense in the '50 when they closed the factories over the summer, retooled, and presented cars that really looked different after the summer. Calling those the next model year made sense. With cars that are identical over 2-3 years, this is just arbitrary.
BTW, it's an American thing. In Europe the date of the first registration defines the age of a car, but over here we don't have unsold cars sitting on dealers lots for years.

Yep, there's definitely others.
Just checked the inventory of one of my local Mazda dealers, they've got 2 '16 CX-5s and 5 '16 6s.
No pictures yet, they all say 'Just Arrived'.

How do you decide that a car sold in early 2015 is a 2016 model? Is it just arbitrary and can you call the same car a 2017 model if you like?
It does seem to be an American thing though.

Wow. That's fast.

To my knowledge, there is a restriction. Take a 2016 MY car for example. It can't go on sale until January 1st, 2015. So, you can't sell a 2016 MY car in 2014, at all. And generally, this is less common, even this early. You generally see the following year's cars start to show up during the 2nd quarter of the current year, normally between May and June, sometimes later. The 2016 Miata, for example, probably won't show up until August of this year.

I suppose this grew from the annual model changes you used to have in America. You know the kind of thing:
"Buy your all-new 1989 Ford! New hubcaps! Extra chrome!" Subtext: the 1988 Ford was rubbish. Why do you still have one?
Move on a year:
"Buy your all-new 1990 Ford! Even newer hubcaps! Even more chrome!" Subtext: the 1989 Ford was rubbish. Why do you still have one?

The F-150 is out, and the 250/350/450 have been out for months.

You're right! I have seen a 2015 F-150 out in the wild once or twice.

I've yet to see one, but I want to.

If they're driving by, and you see one from the side, you're probably not going to notice. You'd have to get a good look from the front. They're not overly different style wise from the previous ones.
